Dental Implants
Dental Implants are used as a way to replace missing teeth, suitable for all age groups. Teeth can be missing for a number of reasons, for instance, you may have lost a tooth through a sports related injury or trauma or perhaps even had teeth missing since birth. Dental implants could be the long term solution you are looking for.
A dental implant is a titanium screw which is placed into the jaw bone, an abutment is then placed into the implant and allows for your final restoration to be fitted, which could be a single crown, bridge or implants can even be used to stabilise and secure a denture in place.
Dental Implant Process
A Step-by-Step Implant Journey
Step 1: Initial Consultation
This consultation is about us getting to know you and understanding your concerns and current situation and to see if implants are the right solution for you. We will discuss with you what Implant treatment entails and other treatment options that may be available for you.
Step 2: Clinical Assessment
At this appointment, we will take any x-rays needed, a 3D scan of your mouth may be recorded which allows us to precisely plan your treatment. A copy of your treatment plan will be sent to you including an estimate for the total cost of your treatment.
Step 3: Implant placement
If you are happy with all aspects of your treatment plan, we will book you an appointment to have your implant placed, this will be carried out within the practice, under local anaesthetic, should you require conscious sedation, we can arrange that for you.
Step 4: Construction of your final restoration
After the initial healing period, usually 3-6 months, we will expose the implant and place a healing abutment, we will then take an impression to get your final restoration made.
Step 5: Fit of your final restoration
The appointment that you have been waiting for, the fit of your new tooth or teeth.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental Implants have been used since the mid 1960’s and in recent years are becoming more and more popular. We are able to show that implants are a safe, convenient way of replacing missing teeth and integrate with the surrounding bone.
Dental Implants are a long term solution to replace missing teeth.
Dental Implants look and function like natural teeth.
They can be used to stabilise & secure a denture.
The Implant stimulates the natural bone renewal process, which helps to maintain your facial features by preventing bone loss.

These procedures are carried out, here within the practice, under local anesthetic, to increase the bone volume for a successful implant placement. If bone needs to be added we can either add synthetic or bovine bone which undergoes a series of processes to ensure that it is sterile and safe to use or your own bone can be used from a donor site within the mouth.
Dental implants require daily cleaning, just like natural teeth, to maintain healthy soft tissues. You are also advised to have regular reviews every 6months with your dentist alongside a professional hygiene appointment to ensure and monitor your oral health.
Implants do have an initial investment which may seem expensive, however in comparison to the cost of replacing crowns, bridges and dentures, they can actually be considerably less long term, a full estimate will be provided for you after your clinical assessment.
Most patients are surprised at how painless the procedure is, it is carried out under local anesthetic. For a few days post-surgery, the area will become swollen, just like after an extraction, and the area may feel uncomfortable this is usually managed by over the counter painkillers.
When you attend the practice for a consultation or clinical assessment, we will advise you of all the options available to you to temporise the area during your implant treatment to avoid you being left with a gap. We will always take the time to ensure that you are happy with all aspects of your treatment plan before commencing with any treatment.
Dental implants are designed to last, success rates are over 95%. They do not come with a lifetime guarantee but with good oral hygiene and regular reviews by your dentist this will help to limit any problems that may occur.
